Ljubljana again

Ljubljana again

So the ‘Human Fish’ thing got resolved on a trip to the Tivoli Gardens here in Ljub. A billboard display of Slovenian ecology has a picture of the Olm, or’human fish’ in the direct translation from Slovenian. A cave-dwelling amphibious creature that was first identified here and lives down in these parts. It must surely rank as one of nature’s least attractive efforts! And now one of the local beers.

The Slovenian people have been an absolute joy. Superb English spoken by virtually everyone we meet plus great courtesy and warmth. And, it seems, a sense of humour with a touch of irony. Early this morning we passed a man pushing a supermarket trolley brimming with empty bottles, mainly wine, beer and a few water bottles. I teased “Looks like it was a heavy night”. After about 10 seconds he let out a huge chuckle as he had just understood what I’d said and replied “Yes but good I had a lot of water too”, and laughed some more.

The castle, Tivoli Park and the Museum of Modern Art filled our day and we discovered a wonderful painter we had never heard of, Gojmir Anton Kos. Glorious sunshine turned to rain by late afternoon – but Ljub still looks and feels fab.

Here’s a favourite spot in the city
