05 Jun Ulm
Agnes done good! Four splendid train journeys each one punctual to the half minute. What joy – oh, and the sun was shining too!
Hopped on the 0833 to Strasbourg and with changes at Offenburg and Karlsruhe we finally reached Ulm (however it’s pronounced) just before 2pm. A footbridge across the Danube and we were soon at the Brickstone Hostel, where everything works on honesty boxes! Just fab.
Ulm is charming, concise, with a famously stunning cathedral that has had a number of drastic alterations over the years including the spectacular spires that were only added in the 1870s it seems, replacing an earlier rather squat and insignificant superstructure. The Germans are clearly comfortable with the uber-modern existing alongside the terribly old so there’s a delightfully uninhibited mix of architectures that blend past and present really well.
