St Veit

St Veit

The hills are alive with ….. the sound of haymaking! High above St Veit there was a constant buzz of blade on blade. Solitary farmers or the whole family; scythes and rakes or mechanised systems of amazing ingenuity; everyone was out cutting the first growth of hay. We guess it’s to feed the cows in the long snowy months of winter, but given there were hardly any cows to be seen, the few that live here are in for a winter blowout!

Hiked 14 km up in the mountains. Spectacular views of peak after peak in all directions once we emerged from the woods. Early steep sections reminded us how unfit we are and how much harder this is than it used to be! Later steep sections on the way down reminded us how much the knees hurt these days! But a good lunch on a Gasthof terrace with views to die for, reminded us why we go through the pain and even enjoy it!

After three days in Austria, tomorrow we’re back on the train heading south to Lake Bled in Slovenia. Just when my German is beginning to emerge from the depths of my language memory and I had all the verbs lined up at the end of the clause – now onto to a language I don’t even understand.

Darlink, I’m so impressed with your stamina! Love the fetching image of the tattoo with the dirndl – very big this season. (I speak as one who is no stranger to this ‘art’…). Onwards! xx
