Metz – via Luxembourg

Metz – via Luxembourg

Whose idea was this? Ah yes, Jim had this notion that continental Europe is perpetually sunny from about mid May. And I was gullible enough to believe him! Who’s he kidding?

We tossed a coin at Bruxelles Midi Zuid this morning and the 10.33 to Luxembourg just pipped the Frankfurt option at 10.27. Long time since I was in the Duchy so why not? Well, mainly because it’s a pretty boring sort of place, the more so in the rain. We stopped long enough to have a coffee and miss the next train to Strasbourg but spent a fascinating hour and a half rubbing shoulders with other travellers eager to get out of the place! Somehow we had both imagined it to be a rather quaint and interesting town. Admittedly, a brief sortie to a coffee bar is barely giving it a chance. But, oh the rain.

Finally we fixed on Metz as a good compromise – a step nearer Istanbul and away from Luxembourg! Two trains a mere 4 minutes apart would get us there. Took the first one, of course. Bad move. “Madame” the charming guard said as we offered our interrail tickets, “you must have a reservation for a TGV. Bien, alors, you must now pay 4 euros each”.

Never mind, Metz is fine – nice station, very French, very wet, very je ne sais quoi!

Jim can still sketch in the rain and we’re having a ball!

Love the freedom of choosing where you go by what trains are leaving!
Sorry about the rain though, Lizzie. Where will this adventure take you
to next? Anyway, we’re having fun just thinking about that!!
